Divorce albums are cathartic for a reason. Music can help us feel and work through all of the experiences and memories that hold our lives together. Divorce can require all the strength and know how that we have, finding outlets during this time can make all of the difference. Read on for more ways to cope and heal during and after your divorce.

Paving The Way to Healing

Whether you are at the beginning of your divorce or finally at the end after a bitter fight, you may be skeptical about your ability to heal and find a new normal. Finding outlets to help you cope, grow, and heal can help you move through your divorce and into your new life.

  • Creative outlets: Don't knock this one if you wouldn't describe yourself as creative. Look at this time as a time to discover new things about yourself. Take a class, whether it is a dance, painting, a silly craft, or wine tasting. (I snuck that one in there!) Try something new and see how it feels. Even if it isn't for you, the hard part of taking the step to try something new is done!
  • Counseling and Support Groups: Whether you choose one on one counseling, support groups, or a combination, reaching out to get help is what matters. As you go through one of the most stressful life experiences you can have, getting lots of support from experts and those in the trenches with you can get you to the other side. Expert advice can help you figure out a way forward that leads to a better life.
  • Exercise: I know, I know. This one may sound as out of reach as the art classes, but exercising can serve many purposes beyond looking a certain way. Exercise can release endorphins, help you feel calmer, give you new strength, and help you feel like the new person you are becoming.
  • Self-care: Prioritizing yourself after years or decades tending to the needs of everyone around you may feel very foreign. Self-care can come in many forms and goes beyond bubble baths. It can include something as simple as setting aside 30 minutes all to yourself each day. Or maybe it's reading a little bit of a book, learning to set boundaries, thinking about goals for your future, or treating yourself to a special meal.
  • Understanding your case: This one may feel like a far fetched "outlet," but hear me out. Understanding the ins and outs of the legal process, getting an understanding of your finances, and gaining a greater feeling of control in your situation is perhaps the best outlet you can find. Knowing you can confidently move through a process that initially scared you is a huge confidence boost that you can take into your new season of life.
